Taxi to the Roman Aqueduct |
Roman Aqueduct. Built under Emperor Hadrian during the 2nd century A.D. Built to supply Segovia with water. Masterpiece of hydraulic engineering, made of big granite ashlars in dry stone construction-without using any kind of mortar. Water ran along the channel at the top and stocked cisterns and public fountains. Water quality was guaranteed through water decanting and other methods. National Monument since 1884. World Heritage Site since 1985. As the city's symbol it appears on its flag, coat of arms, and as a mint mark on coins minted in Segovia. There is a visitor center where I pick up a pamphlet of information on Segovia. After spending around an hour here we take a taxi to the Cathedral as Richard doesn't feel up to walking. Cost?? It's hot.

Taxi to the Cathedral |
Segovia Cathedral. Last to be built in Gothic style. Dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption and to Saint Francis this Catholic church is known for its elegance and slenderness based on a design by Juan Gil de Hontanon. It was consecrated on 7/16/1768. Beautiful stained glass. Lots of side chapels. Admission ticket 6.00€ for us both. Contributes to the preservation of the Cathedral. I also pick up an information pamphlet. Taxi to Maribel for our lunch of roast suckling pig. Cost 5.70€/$6.69

Taxi to Maribel |
Maribel. We decide to do lunch here per recommendation from an earlier taxi driver. Imagine our surprise to see that the view from the outside seating is of the Roman Aqueduct! It's around noon and we had hoped to do lunch but were told lunch doesn't start until 1:30 pm! So we ordered some drinks and got some complimentary snacks while we sat and waited. I also took in the pretty views. There's some road construction going on too. Drinks for lunch-cokes. We ordered the roast suckling pig-one portion to share. Roasted in the traditional oven. Our portions are cut and served to us by our table on individual plates. The skin is very crisp and the meat is tender. It was very good. A side order of the Segovia broad beans which was tasty too. A nice lunch in a nice setting. It was a good choice to come here. Cost 47.50€/

Trattoria Pulcinella. Dinner. Made plans for 8:30 pm as knew we wouldn't want a heavy meal after the lunch we had. Taxi from our hotel. Cost A cute place. Drinks-Sprite for Richard and a glass of the house red wine for me. The wine had a nice taste. Bread. Olives. We ordered the pizza margherita which looked great when it was brought to our table. However, the middle part was not crisp but a bit soggy/limp. Ok but not great. Dessert- 2 scoops of gelato. I chose hazelnut and pistachio. I shared with Richard. Complimentary shot of limoncello which Richard opted not to have. Cost 37.70€/ Taxi back to the hotel. I notice that there is a Starbucks right across the street from our hotel. Maybe tomorrow we'll go there for breakfast.

Tomorrow is our last full day in Madrid. We will do a guided tour of the Royal Palace and maybe that will be it. I guess we'll have to see how we feel. Richard is still not feeling that great and tires easily. It has been very hot and the air quality index has remained at unhealthy for our time here. of corse this does't help Richard's bronchitis and the OTC meds don't seem to be helping.
