Dover Castle. Historic medieval fortress. Strategic importance. Located on the White Cliffs of Dover in Kent. Originally a Norman castle and expanded by King Henry II in the 1180s. Adapted through the years for warfare and used in WWII. The huge network of tunnels that had been built underneath the castle during the Napoleonic Wars for military purposes were used as a command center for Operation Dynamo-the evacuation of Allied soldiers from Dunkirk. I regret that we didn't visit the Wartime Tunnels. There's also a Roman lighthouse that was built after the Roman invasion of Britain. Some say this is the largest castle in England. The hotel called for a taxi to take us here but the driver dropped us off quite a ways from the actual castle grounds. He said he couldn't go any further. Cost 10.00£/$13.59 There was an entry structure and that's where we got our tickets. Used my 2 for 1 voucher. Cost 21.76£/29.56 It was a lengthy walk made harder by it being uphill. We were not happy. We walked around. Went into a building that had an exhibit of sorts. But it just was such bad weather that we decided we'd had enough and really weren't interested in seeing more. Stopped at the gift shop and bought postcards and long sleeve hooded sweatshirts for Richard and myself. Cost 79.80£/$108.41 Then took the mobility shuttle over to another building from which we could get a taxi to take us back to the hotel. This building sells admission tickets and has some souvenir items. I bought a pair of socks to go with my new hoodie. Cost 7.50£ Taxi was called for us and will pick us up right here so we don't have to walk all that distance back to where we had been dropped off. Taxi back to the hotel. Cost 7.00£

Mr. White's English Chophouse. We were considering returning to Il Rustico but the weather is dreary and this place is located right in our hotel. I made a reservation for 7:30 pm. Seated right away at a nice table. Lemonade for Richard and hot chocolate for me. It came with a small square of a yummy brownie type thingy. We both ordered the half roasted chicken. There was a lot of chicken-breast and leg/dark meat. Tender, juicy/moist. Perfect. Came with mushrooms and buttered English leaf spinach. Lots of Madeira wine juices. I gave most of my mushrooms to Richard as I'm not a fan. Service was slow. It took a long time-1 hour-before our food came out. But the food was hot and great. Busy place. Cost 57.50£/$78.11

Tomorrow we go to Canterbury. I am looking forward to this. I can't believe only 1.74 miles today as it seemed like we walked a lot more than that.
