9/18/2025 Breakfast, St. Paul's Cathedral, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Tate Modern, dinner-Daquise

9/18/2025  Breakfast.  We had our meal at the apartment.  I had egg over easy/medium, toast, and coffee.  Richard made himself a breakfast sandwich and tea.  Not bad.  Ready for our first full day sightseeing in London.

We will take the tube.  Walking from the apartment it's only around 10 minutes.  At Earl's Court Station I got a free Tube map.  We each had our own credit card that we used to tap in.  We took the District line to Blackfriars stop.  From here we walked to St. Paul's.

St. Paul's Cathedral.  We will not enter the Cathedral.  We did that back in 2008 and even climbed to the top.  But we're older so we will just walk around and admire the workmanship of the exterior.  From here we will continue to walk to our next stop.

Walking to our next stop

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese.   Pub.  I thought we could stop here for a drink.  When we arrived I saw that there are several rooms.  One large room had lots of tables and appeared to be the room if you were having something to eat.  One room was a bar-mostly standing area.  Downstairs was another room that had a bar and a few table.  One table was occupied by a couple.  There were 3 guys behind the bar.  The empty tables were all in need of a cleaning.  We found one that wasn't so bad and sat down.  Waited for someone to come over and take our order.  Or maybe tell us we need to order at the bar?  Waited, waited.  The 3 guys left and finally, so did we.  I'm upset that this place was no where near to what I thought it would be.  Uber to next stop.-Tate Modern.  Cost 10.09£/$13.85

Tate Modern.   Collection of international modern and contemporary art located in the former Bankside Power Station.  Part of the Tate group with Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool and Tate St. Ives.  Free admission.  There was an exhibition of Picasso-not free.  We had been to the Picasso Museum in Barcelona and I figured I had seen enough go his work to satisfy me.  Not a huge Picasso fan.  Tried to find some art of certain artists but even with a map it was confusing to locate what I was looking for and in the end I just decided to give up.  I was fine with what I had seen and Richard was tired.

Even with the map it was hard to find things

Decided to walk from the Tate Modern to Blackfriars Station in order to take the tube back to the apartment.  Along the way this is some of what we saw.  Using our credit cards to tap in and then to tap out when taking the tube was super easy.  Cost for the tube was 5.70£/4.79 for each of us. That amount was for the tube from the morning and then this one in the afternoon.

Daquise.  Reservation was for 7:30 pm.  I picked this place because it serves Polish food and I wanted to see how good/authentic the food was as compared to back home.  Uber to the restaurant.  Cost 10.60£/$14.55  This was a warm, welcoming restaurant.  We ordered a bottle of sparkling water and I got a glass of red wine.  We started with the dumplings or pierogi as we call them back home.  Back home I fry our pierogi but these were steamed I think.  Got one each-cheese, potato & onion, cabbage & wild mushroom.  They were good but I like the ones I make back home better.  Later at the end of our dinner I mentioned to her that I fry my pierogi and she said she does too at her home but that's not how they're served in the restaurant.  We both went with the breaded pork chop which came with mashed potato.  Honestly I liked this pork chop better than what I make at home.  At home I use bone in center cut pork chop but these were boneless but flatter than our boneless pork chops at home.  The chops were tender and not dry.  The mashed potato was ok but would have been better with my husband's gravy!  Dessert-Polish apple cake is called szarlotka.  This is the restaurant's version of it.  It was delicious.  All in all I'm glad we had dinner here.  The food was tasty and the service was exemplary.  Cost 76.00£/$104.35  Uber back to the apartment.  Cost 8.28£/$11.37

This day did not turn out the way I hoped.  And I learned that I'm not really into modern art.  Walking total was 3.12 miles today.  Tomorrow we have tickets to tour Buckingham Palace.
